| | | | My mother- in- law has locked her computer. There was never a password set
up when the computer was set up, so there is no password or password disk.
The computer is asking for a password to allow access. Is there any way to
reset the computer short of reinstalling the OS. The computer is an Acer and
didn't come with an OS disk. I have an OS disk, but am not sure I can use it.

Let's pretend that at some recent point either a password was entered by
someone or the computer crashed and now thinks it needs a password do to
some bad file or registry entry.
Try this KB.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940765/en-us
You have to boot from the OS Disk, but after you accept the language
settings, click Repair Installation
Follow the KB instructions and pick a Restore Point date when you know that
you could boot the computer and log on without entering a password.
