I had already read your suggestion by someone else in the thread below but there was no "Windows Updater" under "Windows" so that was a no go for me.

In the end, I telephoned Microsoft technical support (here in Australia). I was on the phone to the guy for about an hour. We used web assist (i think thats what its called) and he was able to operate my computer from where he was. I couldnt tell you what he did unfortunately as he was too quick and it all went over my head but he fixed the problem for me and its now updating again. I think he did something similar to your suggestion though in that he deleted some folders.

In fact, the folders are still sitting in my Recycle Bin. They are "AuthCabs", "DataStore", "SelfUpdate", "PostRebootEventCache", "Download" and "WuRedir". In fact, if I right-click on all of those 6 folders and choose Properties they all say "Origin: SoftwareDistribution". Not sure if this is of any help to anyone!

So anyone else who runs into a brick wall like me - I suggest you call Microsoft & get them to sort it out!

RE: Windows can't check for updates

Run>regedit>HMKEY Local Machine>Software>Policies>Microsoft>Windows>Windows Updater

Delete the Windows Updater key, restart the machine and you should get the updates.

Windows can't check for updates

Yes another one who's computer cant check for updates. I have tried everything in the pinned thread above and the thread about this below to no avail.

Any other suggestions on how to get Windows to update? I've had my computer less than 3 months and in the last few days the little icon appeared down the bottom telling me "Windows can't check for updates" yet when I force it to search for updates it searches for hours and hours, I don't even get an error code. I've searched the internet high and low and have found no solution. The last update my Windows installed was "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.31.8557.0) on 7 April, 2008 (Service Pack 1 (KB936330) was installed on 30 March, 2008).

HELP!!!
