| I'm just a notch above the complete novice about computers, so I'm not too sure about this proposal. Question. Would it be possible to use the restore CD from my old computer (still have it) and use it to uninstall Windows Vista and installing Windows XP on my new computer?? Yes, I know the pre-installed software is different on the CD, but the two computers are the same brand (Emachines). The only difference is my new computer has a faster processor (Pentium), more RAM and more over-all disc space. I'm just so sick of Windows Vista. I bought this computer because I thought it would be faster, .... instead, Vista has slowed it down! Can anyone help? |

| The best answer is ... maybe ...
Legally, you can not move an OEM license from one machine to another, it indicates that clearly in the OEM license. But you're probably not asking the legal question.
As to the technical question, that's a different issue. When you buy a machine with a pre-installed OS, the OEM key is locked to the BIOS on the motherboard, not to the machine itself. It's not the brand of the machine, per se, it's the model of the motherboard.
Given that the two machines are different models, it's unlikely that the BIOSs are the same, or close enough to pass the check.
But ... checks vary by motherboard and version, so there is the outside possibility that it will work.
The downside is that if it does NOT work, unless you have a full recovery backup for your Vista box, you'll be left with a box that might boot, but it probably won't get far into Windows.

| | I am guessing yes, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that cause I did it on my old computer with windows xp to windows vista then back to xp. Maybe I'm thinking wrong but I think you should be able to. |
