Luckily, I found a driver for my printer at the official site of HP. But then, whenever I connect the printer to my computer (or even just turn it on), the driver would install. How can I solve this?

How did you install the driver in the first place? Was it using an EXE file? Or was it using driver update? Have you checked in Device Manager and confirmed that the driver installed properly?

Vista is a joke. A lot of drivers said to be for Windows Vista do not work. For example, the HP PSC 1315 driver from HP's website (for Vista) doesn't install because it asks you to connect the printer and to make sure it is turned on. I have tried connecting after this question and before, and I have also tried turning on the printer after I am asked this question. Anyhow, you can proceed with the installation without connecting the printer by checking a box that says "Connect later" or something to that effect, but upon connecting later the windows driver installation pops up like the previous user said. And it will not locate the driver file even if I point it to the HP folder or system folder and check "look in subfolders".

HP help said try uninstalling and installing without having the printer connected. This does not work. Having the printer connected and on prior to installation did not work. Turning on the printer when I was asked to connect the printer did not work. Connecting the printer (while on) when I was asked to connect the printer did not work.

Anyhow this is the 3rd device that I could not get to work properly in Vista despite having driver setup files. Vista is a big mess. I recommend Ubuntu which is less problematic. Microsoft and HP have both lost my loyalty (and I have stuck through them against Netscape, Palm OS, Mozilla, Firefox, Apple).

Incidentally the only device driver that installed properly was microsoft's mouse. Figures. Even a simple USB drive Vista would recognize but be unable to read.

HP's Vista support is also a joke. The driver install installs a bunch of thinly disguised ads. You cannot hit next on the driver install (exe) unless you either connect your printer and the install program realizes you connected (which it doesn't) or if you click on this box "Connect my printer later, and continue with the installation" or something to that effect.

One guy in a forum said he installed it for COM and then enabled the USB later, however my installation was slightly different from what that poster described, and anyhow it was a non-standard approach he took. Things should not be this hard. I switched my desktop OS to linux and am doing fine. I took my Vista CD and tossed it in the trash.

Well put Leo,

I have an Hp 1215 for which there is no Vista driver officially anyway.  However, I found that installing the Hp 7200 driver works just fine.  But, it's not installed as a usb printer even though it is one.  Rather it's installed as a DOT Generic IEEE 1284.  The Hp 7200 is also a Photosmart printer which apparently somewhat closes resembles the Hp 1215.  Everything else I had no problems with finding drivers since my computer is new.  But, even with the last computer which almost seven years plus I did not have that much problem with finding drivers.  Though definitely agreed you may have to search for a long while before finding them.

I've been searching for a very long time for a solution to this and still have not found one.
I am going to try installing the basic hp 7200 driver for windows vista.

If you read through the thread, you would have noticed two things:
1) There are no official HP Vista drivers for this device -- period!
2) Folks using 32-bit Vista have had some success using other drivers for similar HP products.

It's unclear from your post whether you're using 32-bit or 64-bit Vista, but if it's the latter, unless the device drivers for the other products are available and work, you're simply out of luck.

BTW, we don't provide drivers -- but someone may have a source they will suggest.
